Labia minora hypertrophy is defined as an excessive size of the labia minora in relation to the labia majora. In the standing position, the labia minora protrude beyond the vulval slit, leading patients to describe their labia minora as "hanging".
In addition to the "unsightly aspect", which may be accompanied by psychological suffering for some patients, it is above all a daily inconvenience for them, whether in terms of clothing (when wearing tight clothes) or sport (when cycling or horse-riding in particular). In many cases, hypertrophy is also responsible for recurrent mycoses.
Benefits
- Reduction in the size of the labia minora The aim of the operation is to obtain a harmonious vulva, with the size of the labia minora matching that of the labia majora and the volume of the vulva.
- Correcting asymmetry : Most of the time, enlargement of the labia minora is bilateral, but it can sometimes be unilateral.
- Improving quality of life Nymphoplasty not only improves vulvar health by reducing the incidence of mycosis, but also improves overall quality of life.
Procedure
The operation is usually performed on an outpatient basis, under local anaesthetic enhanced by tranquillisers or sedation, but it can also be performed under general anaesthetic.
The technique adopted depends on each case.
Results
The scars fade in 1 to 2 months, so the result can be judged at that time.

Duration of'intervention : 1 to 2 hours
Pre-operative precautions
- Four weeks before the operation, it is essential to stop smoking.
- 14 days before the operation, you should stop taking aspirin and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs, ibuprofen, diclofenac), as well as turmeric, omega-3 and vitamin C.
Post-operative care
Following the operation, there is minimal bleeding for 2 to 3 days. Swelling and bruising are common. The post-operative period is generally not very painful, and can be treated with painkillers.
It is advisable to wear loose-fitting clothing for 1 to 2 weeks. Intimate hygiene should be carried out using a sitz bath twice a day with a usual antiseptic; it is advisable to dry the operated area with a very gentle hairdryer. In principle, the sutures will heal within 8 to 12 days. It is strongly recommended to wait 3 to 4 weeks before resuming sexual activity, and one to two months before resuming an activity such as horse riding or cycling.
