Abdominoplasty is a cosmetic surgery procedure that involves reshaping the abdomen by removing excess fat and skin from the stomach.
Abdominoplasty remains a fairly major plastic surgery procedure, even though it has benefited from numerous technical improvements in recent years.
Benefits
- A new silhouette In addition to aesthetic improvements, abdominoplasty generally brings a clear improvement in terms of comfort, and generally stimulates the adjustment of weight balance.
- Abdomen with excess skin Loss of elasticity: during major weight loss, the skin may not have enough time to retract and may remain flabby. Ageing can also contribute to a loss of skin elasticity. Abdominoplasty can help restore a firmer, flatter stomach.
- Abdomen with excess fat liposuction: once a healthy lifestyle has been adopted (diet and regular exercise), liposuction can be considered to eliminate excess fat in a targeted and effective way.
Procedure
Before the operation, a pre-operative consultation is compulsory to assess your expectations and check that there are no contraindications. A pre-operative check-up and imaging tests may be necessary.
Abdominoplasty is generally performed under general anaesthetic, with hospitalisation lasting 2 to 5 days.
If appropriate, liposuction can be used to remove excess fat. The incision pattern depends on the location and amount of skin to be removed. The more skin to be removed, the larger the scar (above the pubis). The skin above the navel is re-draped downwards and can be "padded" to fix it to the underlying muscular wall, thus improving tension and limiting the risk of effusion.
At the end of the operation, a shaping dressing is applied, which may or may not be combined with a compression girdle.
Results
The results start to be visible after two to three months, but the final result can be appreciated after a year - the time needed for the scar to fade.
As the scar is positioned above the pubis, it is generally concealed by underwear. A laser treatment (VBeam) may be considered if you want the scar to be as inconspicuous as possible.

Pre-operative precautions
- Four weeks before the operation, it is essential to stop smoking. It may also be necessary to stop taking oral contraceptives. No medication containing aspirin or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs, ibuprofen, diclofenac), turmeric, omega-3 or vitamin C should be taken in the 10 days prior to the operation.
Post-operative care
- Dressings should be worn for a fortnight after the operation. A support girdle should be worn for two to four weeks, day and night.
- Pain varies, but is generally bearable with appropriate treatment.
- You will need to take 2 to 4 weeks off work. The scar is often pinkish for the first two to three months, after which it fades. It should not be exposed to sunlight or UV rays for 3 months.
- Sporting activities can be resumed gradually from age 6.th week post-op.
