Blepharoplasty (or eyelid surgery) rejuvenates the eyes and replaces the "tired" look of the eyes with a more rested and relaxed appearance, by removing excess skin and/or muscle while naturally preserving the essential functions of the eyelids.

Blepharoplasty of the upper eyelids is one of the most frequently performed procedures after the age of 40. Minimally invasive, it opens up the eyes by subtly correcting excess skin on the upper eyelids. It sometimes needs to be accompanied by an operation on the lower eyelids, when these are sagging or withered, or when they have a fatty hernia.

Benefits

  • Relaxed look : Blepharoplasty of the upper eyelids will correct the excess skin that gives the impression of drooping eyelids and restore tension to the skin.
  • Overall rejuvenation of the look: Blepharoplasty of the upper and lower eyelids offers an overall rejuvenation of the periocular region, treating not only excess skin or fat, but also the sometimes withered or sagging appearance of the lower eyelids.

Course of treatment

Before the operation, a pre-operative consultation is compulsory, including an examination of the eyes and eyelids to look for any abnormalities that could complicate the operation. This is also an opportunity for the surgeon to ascertain your expectations and, if necessary, adapt the recommended technique or treatment.

In some cases, an ophthalmological examination will also be requested to detect any ocular pathology.

Blepharoplasty of the upper eyelids is usually performed as an outpatient procedure in the operating theatre, under local anaesthetic or sedation. If the presence of an anaesthetist is required, a consultation with him or her will also be arranged.

For the upper eyelidsThe incisions are concealed in the furrow halfway up the eyelid, between the mobile and fixed parts of the eyelid. For the lower eyelids, they are placed 1 to 2 mm under the eyelashes, and may extend slightly beyond them. In both cases, the scars are hidden in the natural folds and are therefore barely visible. The sutures are made with very fine sutures, usually non-absorbable, which are removed five to seven days after the operation.

Results

A period of three to six months is necessary to really appreciate the result. This is the time needed for the tissues to regain their suppleness and for the scars to fade as much as possible.

Blepharoplasty is one of the operations with the highest levels of patient satisfaction. What's more, the results of a blepharoplasty are generally among the longest-lasting in cosmetic surgery. The removal of the "bags" is virtually definitive. On the other hand, the skin continues to age and the resulting laxity can, over time, reproduce the creasing of the eyelids.

Good to know

Blepharoplasty can be performed alone or in conjunction with other cosmetic surgery procedures on the face - such as a facelift - or on the neck. nanofats / microfats or improve skin quality or fill in the hollows of dark circles.

Pre-treatment precautions

  • A pre-operative assessment may be carried out.
  • Four weeks before the operation, it is essential to stop smoking.
  • 14 days before the operation, you should stop taking aspirin and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs, ibuprofen, diclofenac), as well as turmeric, omega-3 and vitamin C.

Post-operative care

When we talk about the post-operative effects of blepharoplasty, we most often mention discomfort linked to a feeling of eyelid tension or tightness. Some patients have difficulty closing their eyelids completely for a few days. The eyes may be sensitive and watery or, on the contrary, dry - hence the prescription of eye drops after the operation.

The bruises disappear within a week to 10 days, during which time sunglasses should be worn and social and cultural avoidance recommended.

An initial manual lymphatic drainage is included in the price, and should be carried out within the first few days. A drainage cure is then strongly recommended to accelerate the resorption of oedema and optimise healing.

Scars may remain pink for the first few weeks, but make-up can be applied quickly. However, they must be scrupulously protected from the sun.

Lastly, a slight induration of the treated areas may persist for a few months, but is not noticeable to those around you.
